Take The Brutally Honest Personality Test at HelloQuizzy

*claps* Very good, HelloQuizzy. Not only was that entertaining, but it was also accurate. I do believe most people know "the real me", however- I can keep everyone's secrets but my own. XD Pathetic, but true.

AHHH I GOTS TEH MUSIC!!! AND TIS MINE! ALL MINE!

:DDD

I am in such a good mood.

My voice teacher *finally* remembered to give me my music. And it's mine. Like, legit mine. Dedicated to me and all. I shall be the first to sing it, and it has my name on it, and I shall go into the city to record it, and it shall be PUBLISHED, so various other music geeks like me who want to sing it will see my name and wonder who the hell I am. XD No, I didn't write it- dear God, I've only taken one year of music theory, people. But it was written for me, and it's so purty! So much so that I can even forgive the composer for not writing it in minor. Just kidding, I lurrve it. At first I was a little put off by its simplicity, but it's really quite beautiful. It's in 9-8, though! I will KEEL HIM! Why must it be so complicated? I only have basic piano skills, dammit, and I want to be able to play my own accompaniment. I can read it, but it's just...annoying...Merr. But I LOVE IT!!! So happy! *squee*

Mebbe I'll record myself singing it. Mebbe. Mebbe not. >.> <.<

Ahh, so excited!

If I could legally discuss the exam (stoopid CollegeBoard), I would in great detail. In a nutshell:

Multiple choice= piece of cake
Essay #1= Ok....
Essay #2= Um...
Essay #3= WTF?!?!?!?

^__^

Oh well. Not bad for having studied for all of five minutes. Seriously. I didn't study. I know, I'm stupid, but I honestly wouldn't have done any better if I had. I knew that before taking it, and now I know for sure.

*dances about*
Now all I have to worry about (hah) are the SAT II's and the Regents, both of which are a joke.

O_O

Aaaaaand there goes my career in sinology. *waves dejectedly* Damn. That eliminates Plan C for my job. And I wanted to learn Chinese this summer. Guess not.

Ok, so that basically rules out any language that does not have an alphabet, or has an alphabet that exceeds 100 letters, because I want to actually make progress before school starts up again. And I should probably try something that's not a Romance language, because that would be cheating on my part. It also has to be provided by Rosetta Stone, because that's what I'll be using. Which means I can't take Armenian- and I am extremely disappointed. You have no idea how much I want to learn Armenian. No, I'm not being sarcastic; my friend is Armenian and she teaches me little phrases, so it would have been nice to be able to actually speak it. It's a fun language, though the alphabet is mind-boggling.

Here's a list of the Rosetta Stone languages:
http://www.rosettastone.com/personal/languages

I don't want to learn German, Hebrew, Dutch, English (obviously), Spanish, Tagalog, Irish, or Welsh. And I've eliminated Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese. *whimpers slightly*

That leaves Arabic, Danish, Farsi, French, Greek, Hindi, Indonesian, Latin, Pashto, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Swedish, Thai, and Turkish.

Arabic, Farsi, and/or Pashto would be awesome. I love Middle Eastern history (though I think I like Chinese better...hmph...), and I can see myself needing to know one of these languages in the future. I am unlikely to need Pashto, however, as Arabic and Farsi are more common, as far as I know.

I'm not so crazy about Danish and Swedish and Polish. It would be cool, but I don't plan on studying Europe - I think....-, much less Northern Europe. At the same time, I doubt I'm ever going to need to know Hindi or Indonesian or Thai (how is Indonesian, Tash?). Or Portuguese.

I've always wanted to learn Russian, but my God, it's impossible to pronounce (though Armenian hardly flows trippingly from my tongue) and rather complex, from what I know of it. Turkish...meh...I think my Armenian friend would outright murder me. XD And Swahili, while it would be really, really awesome to be able to say I speak it, I don't think I'll ever really use it. I don't know anyone with whom I could practice, in any case.

French...would be alright. My mom will be retaking it too, because she says she's forgotten a lot. But it's Romance. I can understand Romance languages. So it would be cheating, I guess. I can just imagine the look on my Nonno's face if I told him I was taking French instead of studying Italian further....*giggles* There's a sort of innate mutual hatred between the French and the Italians. Not sure why.

That leaves Latin and Greek. Both of which would be very useful, for I love philosophy and the classical period. But..I dunno.

If anyone has any advice or suggestions, regardless of what I may have said to discount a language, let me know. I need help. >.<

EDIT: I HATE THIS COMPUTER. SO. EFFING. MUCH. *stabs* I had typed out, here, a whole list of careers I'm interested in, complete with reasons as to why I should or shouldn't go into this or that field, and I was almost done when my computer decided to go back. To the previous page. Deleting everything I had written for the past hour and a half. So I just wasted all that time for nothing. For God's sake, I'm sick and tired of this damn laptop. And I can't afford a new one -my parents sure as hell aren't going to buy one for me. Dammit. I need a job. *cries*

musicalness

I have no reason whatsoever to post, but I don't feel like doing my homework and I feel like blogging. So there you have it.

I'm a wee bit pissed off at my voice teacher- don't get me wrong, she's great, but she's just so freaking disorganized! *winces at hypocrisy* Not like I can talk. But still, I've never lost a piece of music, and most certainly not someone else's music. I was so looking forward to learning the new piece her friend wrote for me, but did she have it? No, no, of course not. She's lost it, and still has to fix the dedications and all, so basically I wasted a lesson looking at random songs. And for the most part, not even good songs. Like, she wants to work on this one song from Handel's Messiah with me, "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach" or something like that. Can't quite remember. She was like, "Do you like it? It's so pretty! Do you want to work on it?", and I said, "Yeah sure, it's really nice...*not*" I dunno, I couldn't say no.  In any case, it wasn't too bad. It was in minor, which scored major brownie points with me, but some of the leaps were incredibly annoying. Not impossible, just annoying. And it was in 12-8. I hate 12-8. It's so...hurried and rushed and engh. Worst of all, it was in English. I don't know why, but I have a complete aversion to *most* songs in English (*cough* probably because the English can't write music to save their lives *ducks tomatoes* *hides*) For the most part. Ever hear or sing "I Attempt From Love's Sickness To Fly"? That song is like freaking musical Touretts (sp?). So fluttery and awkward. Leave music to the Austrians and the Italians, kthxbai. I much prefer singing in other languages. German not so much, as it's freaking impossible to pronounce and nowhere near as pretty as Italian *ducks second batch of tomatoes*, but I'd rather sing in that than in English. I don't know what it is. It doesn't work very well with music, it seems. To me, at least. Italian is by far my language of choice, at least to sing in. So I was relieved when she let me pick a piece from my "24 Italian Arias" book (I love that thing). Fine, so I cheated and picked a song (Marcello's "Il Mio Bel Foco"- it's teh pwnage) that I had both listened to my friend sing recently for All-State and taught myself in 8th grade, but twas all good. ^__^ I hope she saw the sudden improvement in emotion and quality and effort that I put into it, as compared to the other piece. It's also in minor, tres angsty and passionate, and so it's right up my alley. XD I'm good at that kind of thing, dunno why. This year I sang a cheerful, rather slutty song -in major, might I add-, which was challenging for me in that aspect, at least. Last year I sang a song about someone going to hell. *nods* While I think I sounded better on this year's song, I liked "Pieta`, Signore"  (Stradella, I think? Unless it was Caldara...)better, in general. Odd. And I'm not even emo. I hope I work on that Italian song more. Actually, I want my song. And then I hope she hasn't forgotten her promise to let me learn "Les Filles Des Cadix". That song is so awesome. Insanely difficult, but awesome. More sluttage, actually. >.> <.< That's not why I like it. Really. Delibes is just too cool. And totally pwns Faure. *cough* Though "Reve D'Amour" isn't terrible, and his "Pie Jesu" is rather pretty, if a tad on the dull side. I suppose I can't expect too much, it being from "Requiem"...*babbles on in endless stream of musical geekiness*

 EDIT: I got a 98 on All-State!!! *squees* *dances*

Well, All-State wasn't the fiasco I thought it would be. Huh. My judge was polite, but laconic. Fine with me. I didn't do terribly on the song, aside from slightly less emotion due to nerves, and the general crappiness of that high B (always gets me). I think it was because she wasn't writing her comments on the sheet all the while, like most of my judges in the past have, which freaks me out and makes me even more nervous because I wonder what they're writing and try to read their generally illegible scribbles upside-down. I prefer people to look at me when I sing, that way I can at least gauge their reaction for certain, even if it isn't good. She smiled a little, which I guess is better than a blank stare, and wrote for a good three minutes while I looked at my sight singing piece. This too was unusual, for the judges were usually done with the song critiquing by the time I had finished, and so would stare at me while I tried to read the sight singing. But with her not waiting for me, I was able to concentrate for once. Thankfully, it was only in 4-4 time (last year's was in 6-8, which normally I can read, but couldn't then because I was so nervous and wasn't given a lot of time), didn't have the required sol-ti-re arpeggio in first or second inversion, and was actually quite simple. Except for the two sets of triplets. >.< I *think* I got them right. I was flat on la twice, was sharp on mi, and was wavery throughout. And I only crescendoed and decrescendoed slightly because I was so shaky. But other than that, it wasn't too bad. I think this has been the only NYSSMA/All-State that I have not sobbed for hours after. I'm dying to get my results, but I can't really estimate what I got because I don't know how different All-State judging is from NYSSMA. I mean, it's obviously a lot tougher, but I don't know exactly. If I don't get into the 90's, it's going to be humiliating. Actually, I'm going to be upset if I get anything below 95. It's unreasonable, but there you have it. Probably too much to hope for, above a 95. My accompianist was smiling when I finished, and said he couldn't imagine me getting below a 7/10 on sight singing, but he didn't hear me, and only said that I "sang well" on the song, as opposed to the "excellent" from last year. So I don't know what to think. I'm obsessing over this too much, I know. I can't help it. It's the way I am.

And now all I want to do is sing "Una Donna A Quindici Anni" over and over again. Go figure. Why is it that I want to practice it now, when I no longer have any need to? It's kind of sad, actually. I'm like, "Ok, great! It's over! ....now what?" :(  Oh well, now I can start working on that song my voice teacher's friend commissioned for me. I can't wait to hear what it sounds like! :DDD

EDIT: ARGH, HTML must DIE. ...Tash? Help?

Beware: Musical Nerdage Alert

  • Apr. 27th, 2008 at 6:54 PM
talk_nerdy_to_me

I saw August Rush the other night.

Oh. Em. Gee.

I swear to Godric, that movie was like chicken soup for the music geek's soul. Amazing. I think that is now my favorite movie. All that about the overtones and...just...AH! It was so...dunno, squeeful! The sight of all that staff paper was enough to make me bounce up and down in nerdy glee. I mean, I wish Freddy Highmore would have put a little more effort into looking like he was actually conducting -of course, it's possible that he was; I know people who conduct like that, but it's just very difficult to determine if they actually know what they're doing or not- because I couldn't even tell what time signature anything was in...*grumbles* But other than that, it was fantastic. That scene where he's playing at the organ and the little girl says he's an angel, that made me cry a little bit. And there were some parts of the orchestral music that were just incredible- I loved when they had the guitar and cello counterpoint for the first time, I think it was. The actress who played Lyla, Kerri Russel, looks -almost- exactly like how I picture an older Hermione. That's beside the point, though. All in all, I absatively lurved it. And I want it for Christmas. Or my birthday. Whatever.

Speaking of staff paper: I found this a couple of days ago, and I jumped up and down for a few minutes. I'd known they had free staff paper online, but I'd forgotten, and this site is better than most others. It has options for clefs (and not just treble and bass, mind you!) and key signatures and time signatures and...*sigh*

Dream a Little Dream of....?

  • Apr. 26th, 2008 at 12:58 PM
talk_nerdy_to_me

Last night I had an odd dream. I was on a cruise to Bermuda, but it turned back halfway because I had to take the SAT II's. We arrived in some kind of concrete lagoon, where everyone and a couple of foreign exchange students from the Phillipines was taking the test at small round tables in groups of five or so. The booklets were pink. We stood up to take a break, and because everyone's coats and purses and belongings were on the tables, I couldn't find my test booklet and promptly freaked out. Then after walking on the balcony and being suddenly transported to the mall, where I tried on bathing suits at Anthropologie (and some random rap star was giving a concert, by the way), I was informed that we would be putting on our show, the one that just ended a few weeks ago. I hurried back to the set, which was in that weird concrete lagoon thing, still in a brown-and-pink bikini, and started helping everyone with their costumes and makeup. Some little girl who had apparently tried and failed to apply lipstick in moderate amounts came strolling by, and ended up smearing hot pink lipstick all over the bride's gown. I had to wash that costume, wash her own lipstick-y face, and reapply it for her, and by that time it was 5 minutes to curtain. I was still in the bikini, had lipstick all over my hands, and had to put my costume on and get my hair done. Then I was standing in the middle of my street with my family, apparently on vacation in Australia. I begged my parents to let me go to Melbourne (which was about 5 minutes away) so I could visit Tash, but they kept saying, "No no, the caves! We have to see the caves!" and brandished tourist maps at me.

*nods solemnly*
And that, m'dears, was my dream.
The subconscious is a lovely place, is it not?

30.  Edit and post *finally* "10 Minutes of My Life" video, or redo for the 4th time

I officially hate the red eye flight. Yesterday and today have mushed together into one hazy blob of time, and the wooziness due to sleep deprivation and jet lag isn't helping. We were seated at the back of the plane, next to the engine, with two wailing babies in front of us and one irritating madman to our right. I drifted in and out of sleep for four hellish hours while the flight attendants chattered and cackled obnoxiously, felt extremely nauseous, and, having landed at around 5:50 AM, went straight to bed when we got home at around 7. I slept for 5 hours, had the most screwed up dreams I've ever had (involving the Weasley twins and Costco and motorcycle racing and Dancing With The Stars), and woke up at 12:30 PM. As in, afternoon. I hate waking up in the afternoon. It messes me up. So now I am extremely cranky and headachey and discombobulated, and my mood is only exacerbated by the fact that I missed our theatre group's reunion BBQ, and my friends are currently at the beach without me, and it's a beautiful day but I'm indoors unpacking and homeworking and blogging. And I'm doing chemistry. Major hell. This is just one of those Godawful wtf....? days.

In any case, I'm glad to be back. I've missed you guys a ton. Arizona was nice, though. I have to say, it's grown on me. I mean, I mostly just lolled about, reading by the pool and all. I liked the Heard Museum, though I was rather thrown off and miffed by our guide.

Guide: Yes, before we were fortunate enough to have visitors from Chicago (huh? whaddya mean, fortunate enough? is Chicago so Almighty and amazing that to have tourists from said city is an honor?) . Where are you from?
Us: New York.
Guide: New York? Tchah!
Us: ....

I mean, wtf?!? What is it about New York that merits a scoff? I can't think of anything. I mean, this asshole lady lives in Arizona and is from Connecticut. Aside from Angela, of course, what has Arizona got on us? Cacti? And Connecticut! Connecticut! I am utterly apalled that a resident of Connecticut, of all places, has the temerity to scoff at New York. *mutters*
__________________________________________________________________________________
EDIT: In a clearer state of mind, I have realized that it's probably the accent. Honestly though, it's not that bad. Maybe it's because I've grown up with it, but NY accents aren't really as obnoxious as everyone thinks. Not to me, anyway. I mean, I know New Yorkers have accents, and I probably have one myself, so I'm not denying that. But I prefer the NY accent to the AZ accent, which as far as I could tell, involves replacing their "a's" with short "e's" or short "u's", resulting in sentences like: "Now this hurrr perticuler piece of urt..."

*snickers*

Ok, this is a mark of  how tired I am. I started off this entry with, "I was doing my health textbook...", and it took me a few seconds to realize just how wrong that sounded. So now I shall begin again:

I was doing my health homework from my health textbook, which aside from being written for 5 year-olds and having hilarious pictures, includes various "Real-Life Situations" that involve using the Mad Refusal Skillz and "I Messages" that we're supposed to have learned. I almost had a heart attack when I saw this lesson's little blurb, because it dealt with two girls named....wait for it...Natasha and Chantelle! I KNOW! It's not exactly the same, of course, but I'd only read the first few words and I nearly jumped out of my skin. I think my mom was a little concerned. XD
